Hier noch ein paar Bilder von Kay (während der Veranstaltung waren keine Fotos möglich / erlaubt): ENGLISH VERSION Here is Kay's exclusive report from New York: ”Beacon Theatre in New York shaken to the core What an evening! After all the articles about Bono's memoirs as well as the countless appearances in talk, evening as well as TV shows, the time had come. Today, November 2, was the premiere of the reading performance of Bono's Stories of Surrender. In the afternoon the last front row seats were sold for a utopian $5,500 a piece, but about 50 tickets went on sale again, so that a few people were so happy to be able to attend this event on Wednesday morning. In the middle of it instead of just being there was the motto of this evening anyway, because the star contingent was enormous. Bono's family with wife Ali, daughters Eve and Jordan as well as his brother Norman received loud applause as they searched for their seats in the theater. But that wasn't all, Bill and Hillary Clinton (42nd US President and former Secretary of State) did the honors, as did Paul McGuinness, Gavin Friday, Andy Cohen and actor Tom Hanks. Of course Edge was not missing, but he stayed completely in the background. Since this was a cell phone-less event, we were all curious to see how it would go, and it went surprisingly smoothly. Before the ticket scanner, Beacon Theatre staff looked at the e-tickets and wrote the seats and rows for each visitor on green cards. After scanning these before even getting into the building, phones were also 'confiscated' before even getting in the door. These were pushed into a cloth bag with a magnetic closure and thus made 'unusable' for the owner of the phone for the event, because it was even asked to put them into airplane mode. Thus, not even a photo of the merchandising stand could be taken, let alone of the stage set-up. However, if you absolutely had to get to your cell phone, you could have your phone unlocked with a security guard near a bar in the basement, do your 'business' on it, and before it went back up, the phone was locked up again. That stage setup was very simple. Two larger pullup walls, a dining table with four chairs in the middle and a sofa and chair to the left were the stage set, which was completed by a cello player on the left and a harp player ring on the right. According to the theater staff, the set was scheduled from 8:15 - 9:45 p.m., but it didn't start until around 8:30 p.m., and how! To the sounds of City of Blinding Lights Bono entered the stage and the entire auditorium rose and sang along strongly. Bono thanked his band members for allowing him to perform solo. Only after Vertigo was played and sung, the audience began to sit down and slowly Bono started to recite from his book, which was amazingly fluent and almost without the help of the teleprompter. He mentioned that the dramatic first chapter of his book would have been well suited for a dramatic ending of the book. Since many of us have not read or listened to the book (completely), we do not want to anticipate too much here, but the first 2/3 of the set took place mainly in the first 5 chapters of the book with the death of his mother, his difficult childhood, his life at 10 Cedarwood Road and the neighbors and his friends and what music has shaped him so much. Individual narrations were interrupted by verses of With or Without You and Out of Control, because without this song U2 would not be what they became afterwards. Instrumentally, Stories for Boys and I will follow and Iris also played in the background during the individual transitions. In general, the whole set was very entertaining and many of us had tears in our eyes from laughing, because Bono was, is and remains simply a good storyteller and it is easy to hang on his lips, because in many of his sentences there is self-irony as well as self-criticism, for example when he comes to talk about Luciano Pavarotti. This part was concluded with October as an instrumental part before there were anecdotes about U2's former manager Paul McGuinness as well as the other band members and Bono talked about the political influences and ended this with Sunday Bloody Sunday. About the (also sung) song Pride the door to Live Aid had been opened, which had given the band another boost. With 'The Joshua Tree' they finally rose to megastars, which they still are today. After the album, Ali and he first went to Africa to different countries to better understand the situation of the people on the ground, because Bono has spoken at this time with many heads of state in Washington D.C. and at the World Bank, but a real picture can only be created by the people on the ground. This part was rounded off with the contents of the ONE Campaign and Where the Streets have no Name, and Bono went into the RED Campaign, which has collected $750 million for the fight against AIDS/HIV, also thanks to Bill Clinton, who was present in the room. This chapter ended with Desire before it went into the year 2001 with the death of his father and how both would have a better relationship to each other. This part was rounded off with Beautiful Day'. Now we had reached the end of the event and as a final chord there was once again City of Blinding Lights with deafening sing-along, because Bono always announced his love for New York City and the USA in general, and their philosophy of life impresses him so much. After Bono left the stage, it was important not to forget the books that had been given to you at the entrance, and in the outdoor area of the Beacon Theatre, your cell phone case was unlocked and you could get your phone back, even though it had been 'useless' with you the whole time beforehand. It was a brilliant evening and we wish everyone who can attend one of the readings a lot of fun, because it is a really worthwhile event! The following songs were played in New York: City Of Blinding Lights Vertigo With Or Without You Out Of Control Stories For Boys I Will Follow Iris (Hold me Close) Sunday Bloody Sunday Pride Where The Streets Have No Name Desire Beautiful Day Torna a Surriento Gloria (Instrumental) October (Instrumental) Miss Sarajevo (Instrumental) There was also a merchandise set up.
